Week 1

VISIT TO THE CONTEMPORARY:

13th March 2019

Today we were given our brief for our final major project. For the first half of the session we went to visit Nottingham contemporary. This was particularly interesting as I am thinking of going down the video installation route for my FMP.

The installations we saw:

Elizabeth price - 'Felt tip'

Daniel Steegmann Mangrane - 'The word for wold is forest'

(Containing 3 separate gallery rooms)

Gallery 1 - 'Living thoughts' 2019

Gallery 2 - '16mm' 2008-11)

Gallery 3 - 'Phantom - Kingdom of all the animals and all the beasts Is my name' 2015

Gallery 4 - '_C_A_N_O_P_Y_' 2019

The first room we visited was Elizabeth Price's 'FELT TIP' piece. 'FELT TIP' is highly ambitious show from Elizabeth Price featuring two immersive video installations. When we walked into the room the sound was the very first thing I noticed as it was very distinctive, the use of keyboard clicks I thought was extremely effective and really captured your attention, this is something I noted down. In terms of visually, I was very fascinated by the layout of the room. On the floor there were sand bags as seats and on the walls were six large screens. Four of which were on the left hand wall and two were on the front wall, while the other walls where bare.

I loved witnessing the installation in a real life contemporary rather than just online videos because it is a completely different experience and you really get a feel of what the artist is trying to express.

I also really loved looking at the different ways artists display their work and the reasoning behind it. One particularly caught my eye as it was displayed on a TV screen while others were displayed hanging from the ceilings, projected onto walls and even hanging through virtual reality (new 3D technology) by Daniel Steegmann. All of which gave me inspiration for possible ways I would like to exhibit my work for my FMP.

Reflection

The trip to Nottingham contemporary really helped me develop some ideas. I was particularly looking for concepts which inspire me and how the artists bring it all to life. We spoke to a tour guide who spoke us through the pieces because some are difficult to understand and really get you thinking. When you read into their idea and initial concept behind their work, all becomes clear and it is interesting seeing how they have developed their idea to portray their message to an audience.

My next task is to mind map some of my ideas for my FMP and to start researching on concepts I may want to use. Next lesson I plan to spider diagram my notes to help me elaborate on an idea.

My mind map

14th March 2019

We began discussing different ideas as a group by narrowing down the category's and talking about our individual personal ideas.

Music video

Documentary

Short film

Promotional video

Reflection

Because we did promotional adverts last year, I know I don't want to do another one for this years FMP. We have also just done a Documentary and Music video module fairly recently which is why I wanted to choose something slightly more challenging. I love having real creative freedom with my pieces which lead me to my final decision of creating another video installation. Video installation was one of my favourite modules and I have a I feel as though I can express my chosen message best through a contemporary art piece.

Next lesson I will begin my basic research to help develop my idea into something more complex. I have began drawing out sketches of ways I would like to exhibit my piece at the end to help me figure out a plan for what direction I want my piece to go.

Pitch

This morning during Rob's lesson we were introduced to task 3 for our deadline on the 29th of March. I began conducting a PowerPoint for my pitch proposal. We are required to pitch and propose our idea to the class. It is compulsory that our pitch strictly does NOT run over 4-5 minutes and we will be cut off during our presentation if it does so.

Before we start Pre-Production we have to pass the formal pitch to ensure the project is a suitable complexity. This is to ensure our ideas are realistic but still aspiring enough to ensure we reach our target grades.

Inspiration Research

I started looking at video inspiration in the last half of todays lesson. My idea is to create a motivational piece. A concept that people feel motivated by. That people watch and receive a message. I was particularly inspired by the #likeAgirl campaign.

I began researching my possible audience demographic on https://www.artscouncil.org.uk/sites/default/files/download-file/arts_audience_insight_2011.pdf

Today, I went down to the gallery to collect some more secondary research for my research file. I was planning to conduct a survey to see what sorts of people go and watch video installations. To find out what sort of audience demographic I want to be aiming my piece towards. However, unfortunately they had closed and were changing over exhibitions, meaning I could not go on as there was not any available to see at this current time. I plan to re-visit in about a week to see their next exhibition, gain some extra inspiration and collect some more information to go towards my research file which is currently in the process.

IDEA CHANGE:

Because I now have a completely different idea for my FMP, I need to adapt my pitch before I present it to the class for my grade. My pitch did not represent the idea I would me moving forward with which meant I had to completely change it. This meant writing up notes all over again and completely changing what I want to say. This caused for more preparation for my new idea with very little time. On top of this I am juggling the organisation of my visual piece, getting my models together, organising dates, times, outfits, locations etc. As well as finishing off Pre-production and getting together my research file.

Reflection

Because of this, I have decided to come in for more college hours to ensure I stay on top of things. On our half days I am going to be coming in at 9am which will give me plenty of hours to get organised in order for me to do well in this project.

In the meantime, I am editing my casting tapes from my actors on premier pro.

After being inspired by a post on vogue surrounding there Fall collections short fashion film, I was instantly inspired to make my own. I was inspired by the feeling I got when watching it. The visuals cut to the beat of the music along with the music being upbeat creating a fast pace.

The video made me feel empowered and almost reminded me of a music video, the video was cut so that there was narration included which I also really liked and am going to consider using within my own piece.

Week 2:

20th march:

After doing a casting call, tonight I came up with a variety of questions to ask possible candidates for my FMP piece. I have thought long and hard about the sorts of people I want to be included within my video and these questions will hopefully allow the models to elaborate on why they will be a good representation for my video. The following questions bellow will help me narrow down who I want in my video and who I don’t want. This is all part of the Pre-Production process.

The sorts of people I need to have the following contributes...

1. Confidence

2. Individuality

3. A lack of care towards what people think of them

4. A range in ethnicities

5. Perhaps of been through a struggle that has helped them get to where they are now (a story to tell)

6. Quirky dress sense

7. Availability throughout the upcoming month of May

Questions they will be asked in the casting tape:

Name

Age?

Education/Job?

Favourite clothing brand / store?

Why?

What do you want to be in the future?

How can you describe the way you dress?

Favourite colour to wear and why?

Why do you dress the way you dress?

Has anyone ever said anything negative about the way you dress?

What about positive?

Talk us through the look you have gone for today?

How does what you wear impact how you feel?

Have you ever been / felt judged you by your choice of clothing?

Tell us the story...

Describe your style in 3 words?

Has your style changed over the years, when and how has it evolved?

Why are you a good rep for this video, representing unique and confident styles?

WORK EXPERIENCE :

We all took part in work experience today as we had a visit from Sid Siddiqui from Gogglebox. Today's lesson was very productive starting with a talk from guest speaker, Sid Siddiqui who explained to us in depth, his career story and how he got to where he is now.

I loved hearing his success story as it was very inspiring hearing about his journey. Where he started off, to where he is now. Our given task was to create our own TV show idea in groups of three. This took many stages in which we were talked through by our guest speaker today. We started with team building, finding more out about our individual personalities, interests and the strengths we shared as a group. We then began developing an idea as seen bellow...

Reflection

Our next step will be to put forward our idea into the competition. Today allowed us to experience working with a complete different array of people, as we were mixed with the year ones and put into complete random groups. I was put with Jamal and Bruno who i had never worked with before. I really enjoyed starting from scratch developing our simple reality show idea into something more complex, that could be relevant to today's entertainment industry, taking in a number of accounts. I feel as though if our idea was taken further it could develop into something quite successful. Sid Siddiqui seemed to love our idea which has given us a lot of confidence going forward.

Week 3:

Wednesday: Today, I began planning each individual location for each one of my models along with completing pre production. My envision is to change up the background for each scene to ensure there is a different aesthetic all throughout so it doesn't get boring .

This is important because I am trying to reflect individuality within my piece. Each location creates context that is personal to each individual model. I wanted my aesthetic to look very natural, rather than overly planned out. Today I spent the lesson planning out possible locations. I later went on a location scout to get an idea of my aesthetic. Next lesson I will carry on with Pre-Production so that I have the essential elements completed before filming day 1.

Thursday: This afternoon, during lunch I spoke to technician Paul about possible lens’s for my piece. After taking great inspiration from Stuart Winecoff’s work I know that I want to use a very wide lens. I think it is important within a fashion film that the background aesthetic is just as important because it completely sets the scene of the piece. Not only will a wide lens completely open up the setting, helping to set the scene, tone and mood but it will also allow for full body shots. Full body shots are very important in my opinion. Especially in a fashion based experimental film.

Unfortunately, The technician was not there today which means I will have to wait until tomorrow to talk to him about a possible lens for my piece.

This led onto my director research, I have been looking at different directors – In particularly Stuart Winecoff. His use of a wide lens camera really inspired me when looking at camera equipment. I think that when creating a fashion film, the fashion displayed is sometimes if not always just as important as the background aesthetic. It is important to set the scene just as well to ensure that the atmosphere is right for tonal mood of the piece. This is why I have decided to use a wide lens, just like seen in Stuart Winecoff’s work because I think it will impact the overall visual.

Friday:

Today, I went into white rose to see if I could collect any inspiration for my piece in terms of outfits. I came across a few bits that I could possibly use for my piece inspired by vogue.

I asked if it was possible to borrow some pieces for the day as I have heard from word of mouth that they have allowed this before. Although, apparently things have now changed due to a bad experience they had so I can no longer ‘borrow’ outfits unless I am filming inside or outside of the shop.

Because I don’t plan to do this I am going to have to come up with a different plan. I am going to consider buying some outfits after I have double checked sizes with my actors.

Reflection

Luckily, Paul the technician was in today so I was able to discuss my vision and ask for a second opinion.

Paul helped me decide on the Samyang 14mm lens after I described exactly the look I was going for. I also took the 35mm lens with me just in case I wanted to do extreme close ups, which I do (as seen in my treatment) I am now all set with a cannon 600D camera, the two lens’s, two battery’s and a charger. I decided against the tripod as I want my piece to be handheld.

Guest speaker -

Today I rehearsed my presentation in preparation for ‘Lets pitch it’ I have written up my notes at home to help me during my presentation to support the pictures on each slide.

I have learnt from previous projects that less is more with presentations. From the feedback I have received through other modules I have realised it is more effective to have little to no text on screen and to explain as I go along rather than just read of the slide. Not only does this engage my audience but also allows me to think more freely about what I want to say and explain my idea in greater detail. To do this, it makes practice. I have spent this week figuring out what I want to get across within my presentation ready for my turn.

For the second half of the lesson we had guest speaker Manny come in, who is an EX student at Nottingham college. He came to talk to us about his most recent work along with his life at university. About 4 years ago he was sat in our position. It was very useful to hear advice from somebody like Manny. He is now striding to peruse his career in editing, producing and directing and it was very kind for him to come and speak to us first hand and explain his story and his future plan.

He gave advice on student life, work-load, work experience and his overall experience at university in London studying film. We were able to see the work he produced at university which gave me inspiration for upcoming projects. I was particularly fond of his short film piece on his website.

Today I finished off my treatment, which was essential so that I can show my first model, allowing him to connect with my vision so that we can come together in the best way possible to create what I have envisioned.

I have been in contact with my actor today organising meeting and travel costs. I am currently printing off my risk assessment for tomorrow along with my release form. Both of which essential parts of Pre-Production.

Today I went to look at possible indoor locations after being inspired by this photograph I came across on Instagram, I loved the vision with the large glass windows and thought it could look quite vogue inspired. I went on a hunt to a few different locations within Nottingham for e.g. the fashion building at Nottingham College and the Graphic design building and Nottingham Trent university.

Today I made a list on the concepts I would like to be researching throughout this project. I have chosen to specifically focus on fashion throughout my research, as appose to the models.

On this location hunt I came across many mannequins that lead me to the idea of using mannequins at the end of my piece much like the mannequin series seen by Julia Busato. With key message “they don’t fit the mould and thank god for that”

This message is a similar concept to what I am trying to portray within my piece being based upon ‘inclusive fashion’

I have researched the mannequin series for my research file and have become very inspired by the concept. I have a few ideas of how I would incorporate this idea into my piece without copying it. I will be expanding more on it within my research.

I have now decided that the models are going to be used to represent a deeper message rather than it being about them personally.

The key points I am researching currently are – Representation and sexualisation. This is evidenced in my research file. I am finding my research file very interesting and enjoying the process of developing my idea throughout.

I am now becoming pretty clear on my idea after coming up with a concept I am now just expanding on it, creating a very detailed research file to benefit my practical production.

  • Fashion over time

  • Pushing boundaries

  • Men and women – Blurring fashion together

  • The evolution of of fashion

  • Equality in fashion

  • How women are portrayed

  • Sexualisation

  • Representation

  • Comparisons of fashion – Now VS Then

  • “Mini skirt”

  • Stereotypes

  • Representation – Online, magazines etc

  • Independent fashion businesses

  • “Free the nipple” campaign

  • Fashions dirty secrets

  • Confidence

  • Expression

  • Fashion students

Today I filmed my models casting tapes. This was a very important part to ensure that I have chosen the right models for my piece in order to represent individuality, inclusivity and confidence in the correct way. I completed an interview with each candidate asking a series of questions to delve deeper into my subject, finding out their individual thoughts and personal stories. This was a form of character development as it linked the understanding of why they were chosen to model for my practical piece.

I have also put together character bio’s as another form of character development. This has impacted my research and my pre-pro because it has allowed me to find out details on the modes, their music tastes, their role models, their favourite clothing stores etc. getting a deeper insight of their personalities and why they are good candidates. It has also allowed me to take notes of things like sizes for when I plan to borrow some pieces from the local vintage and charity stores for them.

For the majority of this week, I have been working on research in the library to expand on each section and make the most detailed effort I possibly can. To add to my primary research, I decided to conduct a survey on my Instagram platform.

I chose to do it on Instagram rather than on survey monkey because I can see exactly who is voting which means I can make comparisons with age and gender for e.g. which is obviously useful for my topic.

Because a lot of questions were based on social media and image I thought Instagram would be a perfect way to ask my questions because all contributors will be users of social media and be open to being affected.

However, if I conducted a survey monkey, I could receive answers coming from contributors that aren’t open to social media which means my results could be inaccurate. This will all be evidenced within my research file.

Week 4

Filming day 1 - 5th May

I filmed with Fin Thompson French at Nottingham’s sky mirror, near Nottingham playhouse. Also known as the ‘concaved mirror’. This location worked really well, I was also very lucky with the weather. Although, I did face some issues today with pedestrians being in shot which meant I had to re shoot quite a few scenes. Nevertheless, this was fine because they actually ended up turning out better. Overall, todays filming day went very well.

Reflection

I have just returned home and have realised todays huge mistake. Because I want to be using a range of different techniques in my piece… one being slow motion. I have returned home and realised the camera was on the wrong setting! My model was also playing around with the camera and must have accidently changed the shutter speed. This meant that the FPS and shutter speed were not correct for the majority of the filming. I have tested out my footage now and the slow motion looks extremely choppy when put into premier. I am very disappointed by my mistake but will learn from today and move forward as I still have five other scenes to film. My fps should have been on 50 with shutter speed on 100. My fps was on 25 with my shutter speed on 60! Very unfortunate. It doesn’t look to bad if I do not use the slow-motion effect but I am very disappointed because I wanted the slow motion effect to be a great part of my piece to add a very dramatic effect. I may just have to use less of the slow motion effect.

This weeks reflection:

I expanded on my research folder today by looking at a variety of different sources rather than just websites. I spent the morning in the library finding evidence to support my points within books. The library at Nottingham college is very useful for my project because my project is based of fashion. The library is absolutely full of fashion books, I studied the fashion history books discovering how dramatically fashion has changed through different time periods and the comparison between today's fashion with the 40’s and 50’s. I found this research very interesting today and can’t wait to expand on it later.

This evening I have reached out to Cameron Jukes today (one of my models) to ensure we are still on for our filming day tomorrow which we spoke about last week and fully organised. However, he has happened to cancel on me last minute which has left me a little uneasy because I am running out of time. Nevertheless, he has luckily agreed to film with me next week instead so hopefully everything will run smoothly then. This evening and tomorrow, instead, I will be expanding on my inspiration research and editing the casting tapes ready to put on my blog to evidence this section of my pre-production process.

I have also conducted the risk assessment already as I thought we were going to be filming tomorrow, however, this does not matter as it is now out of the way and I can move onto the other ones for my many locations.

Week 5

Today was the day was the day of my second scene. I filmed on castle gate street, near maid Marian way. This was an improvisation from my initial idea. My initial idea was to film on the lit staircase within the Nottinghamshire charity shop COW which I already had legal permission for. However, today it just wasn’t going to plan. The lighting did not look right and the whole aesthetic just wasn’t working as I had pictured. At the time, I panicked because I only had one location in mind that I wanted to film with Samuel Cavan. Although, after wondering round location scouting for approximately an hour and a half, we came across castle street. When we were there the narrow street had sunlight seeping out from behind the tree’s in perfect position, so we began filming in perfect timing. The location colour and aesthetic fit his outfit much better allowing the colours to coordinate rather than having much darker colours against a really colourful background on the COW staircase back in Hockley. Filming took around 2 hours, which meant I had plenty of footage to play with.

Reflection

After coming home and looking back on today’s footage, again I am slightly disappointed because the sunlight looks slightly overexposed which it didn’t do at the time. This was possibly because it was so bright at the time, the camera screen must have been deceiving. This can be altered in aftereffects by turning down the exposure, however it is just a shame I did not notice at the time as it would have saved me a lot of hassle. Something I have already realised while filming this project is that camera settings are so important. I don’t usually have any difficulties with the camera settings whatsoever, so it is unfortunate that I seem to be struggling getting it right for my FMP. Yet, it is all part of my learning process and I am still very much learning as I go along.

Location 1 that I didn't use:

Location 2 that I didn't use:

Location 3 I used :

Week 6

Today i completed my pitch. As a reflection on my presentation, I am very unhappy with how it went today. I had practiced and Pre-planned everything I wanted to say and the points i needed to get across. The nerves seemed to get the better of me today which i am very disappointed about. When i had practiced it before hand I managed just fine. However, with the pressure of wanting to do well I kept having mind blanks throughout and don't feel as though I said everything i wanted to say or, got my point across as i would have liked.

There is nothing i can do about this apart from learn from it, to improve for next time. It was just one of those things.

This week I have been working on my Primary research. I have decided to organise a focus group with the fashion students to help back up my research and get a better idea of their opinions towards expressive fashion and inclusive fashion. The full video will be posted as a sperate blog post. The questions and the write up for this will be posted as a separate blog post.

As a reflection of my focus group overall, I felt as though it was very interactive. I preferred a focus group to a survey because a focus group seemed more personal where everyone can chip in with new ideas, thoughts and opinions rather than just tick a box for e.g.

I wanted to put together a relevant group which is why I chose the fashion students, who have an obvious passion for fashion themselves. This task has really benefited my research and also my pre-production, to help me get a clearer idea on how I want to target my piece suitably for my audience demographic.

Later on

I have spent a lot of time working on the end credits of my piece. Today I spent the lesson experimenting with different effects. I learnt that layering and chopping layers together creates a really cool effect to flicker the text. I really liked this effect and played around with it in today’s lesson, trialing for my final piece.

Week 6

Today I filmed with Cameron Jukes, who I approached over social media asking if he would like to be featured within my experimental film. After telling him about the contextual meaning behind my piece he immediately agreed he would love to be a part of it.

At 1pm we got the tram down to the last stop (Toten lane.) The reason why I chose this location was due to the floral aesthetic, the wide fields with a very calming atmosphere. This location was perfect as there was nobody around accept the odd few dog walkers, which meant we had a lot of space to play around with.

I started by ensuring my camera was on the right setting, having learnt from the two previous shoots the hard way. One my camera was on 50fps with shutter speed on 100 we began filming. It was crucial my settings were on this particular ratio because I am going to be using a lot of slow motion within my piece and I do not want it to look choppy. Hopefully this will look alright when I put the scenes all together because I am a little worried it will be too noticeable that the camera was in the wrong setting beforehand. However, only time will tell, and I can always find ways around it in post-production editing.

I have also completed risk assessment forms for all scenes now. This is a crucial (legal) part of the production process.

Reflection

Overall, todays filming day went better than expected despite the weather. Today was very gloomy with lots of clouds which meant the lighting did not turn out as expected. There was also a spur of rain which luckily, only lasted about five minutes if that. Even though I plan to film my other scenes in sunny weather which could cause an issue, making this scene look slightly out of place, I think it is fixable with post-production editing in aftereffects. I plan to colour correct the whole piece which could include brightening up any clips that seem a little too gloomy. Nevertheless, I think today was a very successful filming day and everything went to plan other than the weather issue.

I have now uploaded all my footage to my hard drive to ensure I do not loose any footage like last time. I already have so many clips for the three scenes I have filmed so far. I am very pleased with this because I will have a lot of footage to play with, ensuring my 2-4 minute piece is as good as it can be.

Week 8

I have spent the morning working on my research file, gaining different sources of research from websites, books to magazines. I feel as though my research is going pretty well so far. Next lesson i will expand a little more on my historical research to support my ideas.

Today we focused on our websites, ensuring that everything is uploaded, up to date and complete. To do so, we gave each other peer feedback. Here is a photograph of the feedback I received for my blog so far. I am very thrilled with the feedback I have been given. As improvement, later I will ensure that my research file is all uploaded. So far i am on 50 pages and just need to get them all uploaded to my blog. I will also upload all of my Pre-Production to make sure everything is all clear.

For the second half of the lesson I went to film with my model, Kezia Powell. We got on the bus and went to Wollaton hall where we filmed for one of my scenes. Overall, it went really well. I was very lucky with today's weather as the sun added to the overall mood creating a bright and warm atmosphere.

The idea was to get as much footage as possible, with a range of different shots and angles. Wollaton park was built up of perfect scenery to help create the right aesthetic for my piece and i cant wait to edit all the footage together in the next week.

I now have only two models left to film with, this week will be my last filming week.

Later on in the week I filmed with Sashana Holton In hockley, outside of ThunderCat tattoo studios. I used the shop window as a background for this piece, obviously after getting permission beforehand, earlier on in the week.

I began by double checking if it was fine for me to begin filming. I got the heads up and continuied on with the production of my 5th out of 6th scene.

Sashana was a pleasure to work with. Directing her was very easy as she listened to every instruction and delivered an amazing performance. The only trouble we faced today was the buisiness of the street. Hockley can be a very busy walk way, particularly at peak times. Unfortunatly, today was the only day and time sashana was free so we had to make do. This was okay, however, it just meant filming was slightly delayed overtime (Running over schedule) because of the amount of times we had to wait for people to pass.

I did not want any background activity going on in the reflection because I wanted the focus to be all upon my actor. Having constant action going on in the background was very distracting and meant that some footage was unusable.

Nevertheless, the footage I did get today was perfect and will fit the aesthetic just as I envisioned. I did not manage to get as much footage (clips) as my other scenes however this will not matter once the production is edited because I will be picking the best parts regardless and my piece will only run for 2-3 minuites. This means it will not be apparent that I did not gain as much footage from todays shoot.

The reason why I did not film as much footaage was purely down to the surroundings. There was only so many poses you could do infront of a shop window as spose to my other scenes where they have had a lot more to play with e.g. Stairs, Trees, Buildings, Props etc..

I did not want to drag out the filming process either as I wanted my models to have fun when filming, just as I did. It comes across on camera If they are not feeling genuinely happy. I wanted to capture the raw authenic laughs and smiles to make it REAL, highlighting my message.

WEEK 9

This week has been jammed pack full. I have finally filmed my last scene. I was very worried I would be leaving it too late, however, I am on a monthly subscription with the adobe package which means I have access to premier pro at home and can therefore edit in the half term.

Today I took my final model down to cowlick park. We arrived by bus by about 2pm and were very lucky with the weather. Unfortunately, we faced some troubles with the business of the park due to peak holiday times. This meant we spent a lot of time letting people past and waiting for people to go past until we could then film the shot. This was no problem although it did waste a lot of time which meant the sun did start to go in. I did not get as many sunlight shots as I had hoped but managed to make up for it through improvisation of different angles, panning shots and movement shots.

Unfortunately, I was not able to get my hands on a dolly tripod again which meant I had to go handheld. I did not mind this because I prefer using my hands for a more natural effect allowing me to get up close with all sorts of angles, similarly to Stuart Winecoff’s work seen within my research. His work particularly inspired me for my FMP because of his use of wide shots, as seen within my scenes which are greatly inspired by Winecoff.

Reflection

Being my last and final scene, I am very excited to get in-fixed to my laptop and begin the editing process. I already have a clear vision in my head how I would like it to turn out and I am very thrilled to have finished. I thoroughly enjoyed the process of each scene and had a lot of fun with the models as seen in the out take clips. I am very grateful for the hours they spent out of there own time to help me get each shot perfect.

In terms of this week, I will be spending this weekend editing the first half of my piece. I then plan to begin writing my evaluation and updating my blog with any recent pictures and files that are still yet to be evidenced.

Today I filmed with Ella simpson in colwick park. Due to a private situation my model was faced with, we had to film later than I originally planned. This actually ended up working in my favour because the sun was set perfectly in order for me to get some beaming sunlight shots.

Overall, todays filming day ran smoothly despite the battery running out super fast at the end! After re watching the footage now I am home I am very pleased with the shots. The natural lighting today was probably the best I have had throughout every scene.

This meant that settings did not have to be messed around with as much so the whole piece was filmed in the correct 50fps and 100 shutter speed.

I have had problems with the lighting throughout the production of this project. Having the 14mm lens on means that I can only adjust the brightness to a certain degree without having to change the other settings. This did get a little confusing with the settings having to be alered every two minuites. However, the lighting today was perfect.

The footage looks amazing in slow motion because of the amount of movement shots I got today! I am very pleased with the result. Now I have finished all the filming for this piece, I am now planning my edit, searching through ALL of my clips and picking out the best ones!

I have been using my spare time to create a logo for my piece This project I wanted to do something different however, still include the typewriter text effect to create fluidity between all my pieces. I love the idea of people recognising your work because of a distinct style etc… I have chosen a simple but effective logo that isn’t too complex however still noticeably mine. I chose to create a logo instead of just having regular credits because I wanted to stand out, making my piece look different to the rest.

Week 10 - DEADLINE WEEK

Wednesday: I began the week ensuring I had everything required on the brief. From my pre-production folder, to my uploaded research file, to my practical production, development and of course my evaluation.

I began by writing my evaluation, I found this very easy as I have been evaluating my processes throughout which meant that it was just a case of writing it all up. Once I had finished my evaluation, I went on to printing everything off. Because all my work was either uploaded onto my blog or just held on my hard drive, I had to spend a lot of time printing and organising my work in a presentable manor.

I spent most of my week in the library ensuring that each section is highly detailed, and I have not missed anything.

Thursday: Today I have been collecting feedback from my practical piece. Overall, I am very pleased with the feedback I have received from my FMP piece. I have received both positive feedbacks along with constructive either face to face or other Facebook where I posted my final piece, live, open to comments to help me assess my piece for its strengths and weaknesses. This has been very useful to me when finishing off my evaluation, helping me see the strong points of this project, and what perhaps I could have done better.

Friday: Today was DEADLINE day. This was a very stressful day purely because of the atmosphere in the room due to it being our final lesson ever! Today ran smoothly because I did not leave anything till the last minute and I kept on schedule, completing everything in plenty of time.

Now I have handed in everything have had time to process today and think about all my work. Overall, as a reflection of this project I am very happy with how it panned out in the end. After my panic at the beginning, during the consecutive weeks with my rushed idea change, to now coming out with a piece I am extremely proud of. I am lucky that it all panned out for the best. I have learnt a lot this project. I would say determination is what has got me through. I have been determined throughout my final year to push myself because I want to succeed and do well. I have particularly needed a determined mindset throughout this project because of how much I struggled at the start getting an idea. I did not want to settle for anything less than a strong idea that I could envision myself making and get excited about. I think it is very important that I am passionate about my pieces in order for that to come across and be projected throughout my work to my audience.

Without that true passion it is simply not the same. I have enjoyed all sections of this project and I am actually really sad to have finished now. I have really enjoyed my time at Nottingham college and will miss it. The teachers have always supported my work and pushed me to achieve my best which has helped me progress over the course of the year.

My FMP has been one of my favourite projects along with video installation and music video. I feel as through my FMP is an all-round mixture of both video installation and music video in one which is why I think I enjoyed it so much.

I also enjoyed the in-depth research I produced to back up my practical production. I ended up producing a very large research file purely because I enjoyed looking into inspirations, researching directors and developing my idea through different stages of research. Some benefitted me more than others however all sections helped broaden my knowledge and I learnt a lot through the process.

In terms of my website, I have uploaded the different sections as a way to evidence my work along with reflect on it as I go along (my reflective journal.) This has allowed me to progress throughout through self-evaluation.

Overall, I am very proud of my FMP and have worked very hard on it over the past 10 weeks. I have faced many challenges but have learnt how to overcome them as I go along through self-motivation and determination.
