Research Evaluation
What type of research have you conducted in your research file?
My research file contains, inspirational, director, target audience demographic, legal, contextual, historical, practical, theoretical, developmental, practical production and primary research. I have researched a wide variety of different sources which is how I have pushed myself outside the box throughout my research, these sources range from magazines, books, articles to exhibitions and photography etc... This is to expand my research beyond ordinary web pages and help me think imaginatively, outside of the box.
Because my piece is based on 'inclusive fashion', confidence and individuality, it was a crucial part of my research to include a detailed amount of theoretical research to support my concept and expand on the deeper meaning.
Inspiration research was also hugely influential to my research file by allowing me to discover what has already been done and then allowing me to think outside of the box. I also think theoretical research was particularly useful in order to give my video purpose, researching deeper into the meaning behind my piece and the controversy some people have surrounding my topic 'Inclusive fashion' which I found very interesting. I also really enjoyed researching practical production techniques, along with a range of different director's / photographers individual unique styles that gave me inspiration, allowing me to think about which direction I want my piece to go, in terms of style. I knew slow motion was going to be a large part of my piece in order to have that dramatic effect I envisioned. However, researching different lighting and editing techniques has really helped me transform my piece, making it look much more professional, and even more professional than I had envisioned, which is of course a positive.
On the other hand, I did not find historical research as useful as I had hoped. The reason for this was that, I found it extremely hard to actually find fashion films from historic periods due to the advancement in technology only in the last 20 years. This meant that I focused more on the actual fashion trends back in the 40s and 50s rather than "fashion films" - Fashion films have only recently become so popular and are mostly displayed on social media, back in the 40's and 50's of course, this was not a thing!
I also found primary and secondary research extremely helpful, particularly the visits to the contemporary which allowed me to think of possible different concepts to display my work or edit my work. This helped me to again, think outside of the box, but also gain inspiration from pieces that are already doing well in this current time, this was good for me to keep in mind.
My primary research was crucial and extremely helpful, speaking to a range of different people through my focus group and my surveys to gather a wider source of opinions on the topic. It was most interesting within my focus group, seeing the reactions of people agreeing and arguing for and against my topic ‘inclusive fashion’, social media pressure, sexualisation, representation and much more.
This benefited my research and therefore my overall production by allowing me to think deeper into what will appeal to my target audience the best and actually create effect, hopefully to make a difference.
I feel as though my research file really backs up the entire meaning behind my piece giving it purpose. The idea was to create a fun, raw and authentic looking experimental fashion film to portray confidence within a more inclusive environment with models of all different heights, shapes, sizes and from different cultures. In order for my video to be pulled off, the research and contextual part of my piece had to be just as important in order to connect the meaning with the visuals. Overall, my research file went very well and I actually thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent on it. It has 100% positively impacted my practical piece and helped develop it, along the way.
