Today i began editing my video installation. I have started by sorting through my footage to try and pick my strongest footage. Bellow i have included screenshots of the editing process so far and location photographs for part of my pre production folder.
MY LOCATION SHOOT
I filmed my installation over two days because i struggled with light. I has to film approximately between 9am-3pm due to the winter and it getting dark early. The light was perfect mid day as the sun shinned through the window perfectly which lit my installation from a different angle.
Reflection on the filming process
As you can see i had to over come some difficulties with my work space. As seen in my risk assessment wires and trip hazards were a big issue for me, this was distinctively a problem on my filming day and was something i had to work with to overcome by ensuring i moved around very slowly and carefully because a lot of things were being balanced. I also had a lot of materials and the actual filming process wasn't easy in the way when i began the 'Acrylic paint pour' process everything had to be done very quickly in order for it to work successfully. I decided to film in my garage due to mess and the strong paint smell, the garage space also allowed me to have a larger area to play with and i didn't matter as much if i got things dirty.
The problems i had to over come consisted of improvisation due to lack of equipment, i had to balance the lights and tripod legs on different objects in order to get them in the right position. I also had to pause filming on day one because i was missing an important tool which was the right gas to go inside the heat gun, this resulted in me having to wait for my dad to kindly go out and buy the gas to then help me set up the heat gun. This was another potential hazard on my risk assessment although with some help preparing the heat gun everything was fine in the end. regardless of this short term issue i worked with what i had and felt as through overall, my filming experience ran smoothly with this project despite having to change cameras because of high demand for the college camera equipment, it would of been selfish for me to keep the camera for as long as i would of wanted so i gave the camera back after day one of filming so that other people had the chance to use it too. However, this was not such a problem because i managed to film just as well with my own personal sony camera and made do with what i had at the time.
In terms of the actual acrylic pour its self, it took a few experiments and trial and error before my final product to ensure it actually worked and gave the effect i had hoped for. I had to change certain things for example the ratio of ingredient used, this took a little time to perfect because it is difficult to judge without using trial and error to get a feel for the different effects it can give off depending on color, pouring medium, heat and silicone used. This was another potential problem due to budget. Overall, this project was very expensive because i had to go out and purchase all the resources in time for the filming day. None of the resources i had already. I feel as though it payed off though because not only did i really enjoy the process because of my love for art and design, but i also feel it made a good visually pleasing video installation for my project. My aim was to create something different, satisfying and calming to watch. I wanted to incorporate my artistic side within one of my projects and i felt this particular one was perfect for that and fit appropriately.
