I began my proposal today for my video installation. Pre-production is a key step when making any production piece. Whether that being a TV show, documentary, music video.. or for this instance a video installation.
Proposal- Video Installation
I propose to create a short 1 to 2-minute video installation, using moving image and relevant sound tracks to compliment my piece. My Idea is to create a huge acrylic paint pour on a large white canvas. The surroundings will be brightly lit and I will include metallic and florescent colours that are visually pleasing to look at within the paint pour.
In terms of what gave me this idea, I had seen these videos on Facebook and was reading the comments after realising this could be a possible concept for my video installation project. Many people found them very interesting and even satisfying to watch due to the colour and movement. The cells within the paint pour look fascinating. When I come to creating my installation I have a few ideas on how I am going to film my piece, one being to focus on the cells within the paint separation. When rubbing alcohol is dripped onto acrylic the paint begins to separate to create a cell looking pattern that I find extremely mesmerising to look at. Especially when they are being formed. My installation will covey my love of art and passion for creative concepts.
When I first saw a video of the specific painting, what is known as a ‘messy paint pour’ my initial thought was of the ocean. The cells look almost jellyfish like because of the way they all form together. If I was to show the cells forming by actually filming reaction when the rubbing alcohol hits the acrylic I’m hoping it will look even more effective. It could look like someone’s negative tears dropping, turning into something beautiful and positive. This will be extenuated by the bright colours I am planning on using that will progressively brighten throughout the piece.
I might use a split screen create a duo piece, using different colours. One in black and white and one with after effects bright colour correction, this will create an extreme contrast and give completely different effects. It will show the contrast between two different moods and although I will use the same video, it portrays two different ways of thinking. Your thoughts control your outlook on life. You can be feeling sad, crying yet thinking negatively will only make you feel worse (the black and white.) having a positive mind set is so important and sometimes putting on a brave face can help you deal with something (the colour.)
It could also portray that you don’t know what someone is going through they can seem happy, bright and positive yet still cry and be upset.
I want to convey emotion throughout my piece. The lighting will be bright and bold throughout. It will also be contrasted with dark and gloomier looking scenes. These will be the scenes in black and white showing a darker mind set in disparity with a positive mind set. The after effects colour correction editing I will do post production, will help me enhance the colour in the positive mind set split screen and ensure the florescent colours are as bold and eye striking as they can be.
In terms of sound, I want to ensure that the main focus is upon the movement throughout the installation. I will be using different techniques such as fast motion, reverse and slow motion to play around with the pace of the piece and to again portray different areas of emotion. Because of this, I don’t want the sound to be to prominent in case it takes the focal point away from the visuals. Although, I will use a few different sound effects such as dripping, paint splashes, swoosh sounds, ocean sound effects, water droplets, intense sounds that bring out the visuals and compliment them. I want the sound to really enhance and movement and build an atmosphere. The sound will be jolty and unusual, giving it a unique feel. My aim is to make people question what they have just watched yet still enjoy it and find it visually pleasing as an installation. In conclusion to this, the sound I propose to use will be non-diegetic as I will add my sound tracks in post-production (when editing) sound will be recorded separately so that it is really intense and distinctive.
Thinking about demographics, I am aiming my installation more towards an older audience 16+ because it has a deeper concept than first meets the eye. Although, there is no reason why a much younger audience wouldn’t enjoy the installation because I am going to ensure it is mesmerising in many ways. Sound, colour, cinematography etc. The only negative aspect with it being aimed towards a young audience could be that the true meaning gets lost as it requires a lot of deep thinking to understand the concept and accurate meaning. This won’t be as impactful due to the observation of the installations concept not being understood to its full potential. A younger audience simply may not get it and be able to relate the implication to the visual as much as say, an older demographic perhaps.
