Having a creative eye is something I pride myself on. Since before I can remember I have had a passion for the camera. At the age of ten I was creating music videos, holiday vlogs and creating narratives for my own short films, which I structed, filmed, edited and produced, all through self-teaching. I created edits of my own film and CD covers, taught myself single and multi-camera techniques for short films and fell in love with the process of producing my own creative content.

This passion led me to take part in a summer film school in 2013 at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham, which enabled me to share the creative experience with a wider team. This was my first experience creating short films in a group and I found that I thoroughly enjoyed the team work process. I remember being particularly proud when our film was premiered at the theatre. The following year I started my own YouTube channel as a platform to share my creative content with the world, expressing myself through my love of filming and editing. By providing regular and engaging content my You-tube channel quickly grew in popularity, with 8K subscribers and one particular video getting 240K views. I’m still very proud of this achievement.

This led to my UAL Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production Technology: Film and Television course at New College Nottingham, which allowed me to build my skills - both practical and theoretical. Strong practical experience within Live TV, short film, documentary, music video, video installation, advert, website and interviews. Also using Premier Pro and after-effects for post-production editing. I’ve also surprised myself with how much I enjoyed the theoretical aspects including the final major project, presentations, critical analysis, pre-production and essay writing throughout the two years.

As well as visits to the BBC studios, I personally sought out work experience with Vanishing Point, a company who focus on creative photography, graphic design, styling and film for websites, social media and retail catalogues such as NEXT and Dunelm. I enjoyed this very much because as well as being creative it allowed me to gain a business perspective - I learnt a lot and got a taste for the ‘real world’, working with business teams under pressure to deliver results for clients on stretching timescales.

For a number of years now it’s been clear to me that media is where my passion lies, although to be honest I’m still not entirely sure of what exact direction this will take me. I hope that my time at university (and in further work placements) will both broaden and deepen my skills and help me select my eventual pathway. I’m excited that the British media industry is continuing to go from strength to strength and, with the support of experienced tutors and fellow students, as well as my own hard work and dedication, I can’t wait to find out what role I will play in it in the years to come.
